Emblem

The powerful head of an Aboriginal chief emerged from the hood of Pontiac vehicles until it was replaced by an arrowhead in 1957. The figure is most likely that of Chief Pontiac of the Odawa Nation, who is remembered most for leading a siege against the British at Fort Detroit in 1763.

Senator Gladstone (1887-1971), a member of the Kainai (Blood) Nation of Alberta, was a rancher and farmer, and an advocate for the rights of Canada’s First Nations. His accomplishments were recognized by the Federal Government in 1958 when Prime Minister John Diefenbaker appointed him to the Senate. Mr. Gladstone was the first member of Canada’s First Nations to sit in the upper house. This photograph was taken in the year of that appointment.
